In the autumn term we read many Katie Morag stories by Mairi Hedderwick. We compare the real island of Coll which the stories are based upon with Aldershot.
Children write stories about other exciting adventures Katie Morag could have.
We make posters using an ICT art package to advertise the island of Coll.
We also design and create imaginary islands out of clay.
We carry out several problem solving investigations:
“Mrs Mathias wants to improve our school grounds by planting some new plants. Where is the best place to plant them?”
We explore plant life cycles and investigate how a young oak tree began growing in the grass verge.
Alice Holt Forest
We visit Alice Holt Woodland Forest to find out more about other plant and animal habitats. This is a really enjoyable and valuable day out.
For Harvest Festival we think about how other faiths celebrate their harvest and make model Sukkahs like those the Jewish people make when they celebrate Sukkot.
The Great Fire of London
We learn about the Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys. We know that Samuel Pepys provided much of the evidence for what we know about the Great Fire in his diary.
We try to answer these questions:
- What was the Great Fire of London?
- Why did the fire spread so quickly?
- Why was it difficult to put out?
We create displays in the school to show what we have learnt and to teach others about the Great Fire.
Exploring circuits –
- Can you make the bulb light up?
- What should you check if it doesn’t light up?
- How can you turn the light off?
We make explanation booklets about electricity to put in the school library.
December is a time for making gifts for Christmas and preparing our Christmas Plays.
